Approaches to Learning

The Reading Foundation provides evaluation and tutorial programs for readers of all ages and backgrounds. Our staff is composed of practitioners and educators who are trained in the Orton-Gillingham method of instruction. The classrooms are located in Amherst, NH and scheduling is arranged to accommodate the various needs of each student.

Our Approach

Referrals and applications to The Reading Foundation are made by teachers, parents, medical professionals, and evaluators. An evaluation of the student's reading capabilities is conducted by the staff and a program is designed to fit each student's needs, capacity, and skill level.   The resources of The Reading Foundation help the reader achieve mastery in each of the skills necessary for good reading performance.  School year and summer programs are offered for students who range from five-year-olds to adults.

Our Philosphy

The Orton-Gillingham philosophy of learning is based on the study of language, how children acquire language, and the mechanisms involved in learning. All the learning pathways of the brain-- visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile-- are addressed and strengthened to build a strong foundation for the acquisition of reading skills.

Why it works

Under the guidance of an Academy Fellow, tutors provide state of the art research-based methods that focus on language and reading development.  These areas of instruction include phonological awareness, decoding, spelling, handwriting, written expression, and organizational skills.
